How to end the endless “getting in shape for summer” project and create lasting change

September 9, 2025

autumn

For many, autumn feels like a new beginning. Summer has passed, the days slow down, and it seems like the perfect time to finally take action – lose weight, eat healthier, or move more. But often the same pattern repeats itself: we set goals “by Christmas,” “by New Year,” or “by next summer.”

We try for a while, but the results don’t last. The yo-yo cycle continues, and each new start feels harder than the last one. How can we break this cycle?

1. Find the real reason why the weight keeps coming back

If you think your main issue is simply “too much food” or “wrong choices,” chances are you haven’t yet uncovered the deeper causes. Food is usually just the tip of the iceberg.

The real reason might be an irregular daily routine, chronic fatigue, stress, emotional eating, or imbalances in health markers. If these are left unaddressed, the same cycle will keep repeating.

So before you set another “minus 10 kg by summer” goal, ask yourself: what is the real reason my weight always comes back?

2. Don’t do it alone

Going solo can work for a while, but in the long run it rarely lasts. Without support and accountability, it’s easy to slip back into old habits.

This is where a mentor, accountability partner, or health coach can make all the difference. Someone who sees you from the outside, notices what you don’t, and helps you stay on track when your motivation starts to fade. A knowledgeable professional can give practical advice and support you at exactly the right moments.

3. Address the psychological and emotional side

Quick results often come when we change how we eat – eating less or choosing healthier foods. But if our relationship with ourselves, our bodies, and food doesn’t change, the results won’t last.

For lasting change, it’s important to also work on the inner side:

– why do I eat when I’m not hungry?

– what beliefs or emotions are driving me?

– how do I truly feel about my body?

When these questions are answered, you can create a new relationship with food – one that no longer leads to constant weight gain and endless dieting cycles.

Autumn can be your chance to start differently. Not with another deadline-driven “project” or strict diet, but with gradual, sustainable steps that support you all year round.

  • Find the true reason behind the cycle.
  • Get a mentor or accountability partner.
  • Transform your relationship with food and with yourself.

That way, you don’t have to live for the “next deadline” – you can feel good in every season.
